I remember watching this in 10th grade science, very fun and cool trick. It works with any carbonated beverage, not just Diet.

However, it works much better with diet soda and especially coke. I don't exactly know why coke is superior, but diet is better because the aspartame lowers the surface tension allowing for a bigger reaction.

Wow. I'm amazed at how well Diet Coke works with Mentos compared to other sodas out there. I might as well use that next time I want to make it rain soda.

I know the two men in their first tests stuck with diet coke to prevent ants eating on the sugars of regular coke. For some reason they same to not be attracted to dietary sugars, I guess they got more bang for their buck :D
