I've read up about ACTA (The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement). And it will not benefit any of us in any way.

This video is incredibly biased. Unparalleled levels of surveillance? I don't remember seeing anywhere in ACTA that they were going to wiretap everyone's phones in the world and install cameras in everyone's houses.

ISPs already check for copyrighted material on their servers. It is a well known fact that ISPs frequently warn their customers to stop pirating when they discover that the user has been downloading copyrighted material. The problem is that no one actually checks the email account given with the ISP account and that it is currently difficult for copyright offenders to be prosecuted due to their sheer volume and a lack of solidified laws to enforce the copyrights.

This would NOT destroy sites like youtube. We've already seen the removal of copyrighted material from youtube. Publishing companies who have worked at getting the copyrighted material pulled from youtube have already succeeded in some cases. Then they put the same exact music video up with their own advertisements. I can't even count the number of bands I've listened to on youtube where their entire album was uploaded to youtube by the publishing company itself with an advertisement below or to the side telling me to buy the album and other merchandise.

Opposition to these recently proposed bills seem to forget that the aim is not to censor everything and anything on the internet, it is to stop or slow the misuse of copyrighted material. So, as long as you are not stealing copyrighted material, you're fine. No one is going to go through your facebook and look through every single one of your pictures to find the one with the pepsi logo featured in the bottom right hand corner. That's a little bit ridiculous.

These proposed laws may not be perfect in their wording, but it is not an easy thing to do. Defining a gray area is a difficult process, but it is something that needs to be done in order to properly enforce laws that are already in place and violated on a daily basis by millions.

All this ACTA stuff was just brought up because of SOPA, but really this law was proposed in 2008 and signed in 2011.
