The neck of the Walker is it's weak point. Even on the Star Wars Battlegrounds games.
"Their armor is resistant to most standard blaster weapons; however, the "neck" column of the walker holds no such invulnerability and, if shot, can cause the entire walker to be destroyed." - Wiki Article on Imperial Walkers
Everyone is born with wings to fly. Only most people don't try to spread their wings and fly or worse they don't believe they can and all they do is look enviously upon those who have found theirs and begun to soar!I will not be one of these people, and when I fly it will not be with fake wings made of wax. They will be my own wings and I will bring myself up to the top and touch the heavens!

So if that's the case, then why didn't they just fly over them and shoot em in the neck??
the T-47 airspeeder can only shoot forwards, for them to have done that would have meant that they would have needed to go straight up, almost to the point of staling (As the airspeeder isn't designed for high altitude flight) then coming straight down and shooting into the neck of the Walker. Also Hoth at ground level was cold enough as it was, the airspeeders needed to be retrofitted with heaters to keep their fuel from freezing, higher altitudes would have probably caused the heat to fail.
There are way better examples of movie mistakes in star wars than this one here, I've never seen this as a mistake, you can clearly see him shooting the neck.

Well what about shooting the side of the neck. It is just as exposed as the top part of the neck. They could have easily gone in from the side, avoiding all gunfire in the process since the walker can only shoot forward.

Hmm I'm trying to see if you're trolling or not, don't see why you would use your spare time to make a thread about this.
There are obvious reasons why a walker was only especially vulnerable in the neck when they were disabled. As for shooting it in the neck from the side? Maybe they don't show a walker being taken down that way, maybe from the sides they have extra plating. Who knows. I don't really want to waste more time on this.

Play Battlefront 2 load up the Hoth map and try and shot an AT-AT in the neck. It is extremely hard to fly air-speeder without being shot down and it is even harder to line up a shot on their neck. It is also noted that rebel pilot weren't highly trained.
Also another theory maybe the lasers were not involved with the explosion and it was just a fluke that the the explosion happened when the laser hit the neck region. As seen in the clip When the AT-AT trips I believe it could have suffered a huge amount of internal damage on impact. There is a high chance a leak occurred in the fuel supply ( whatever fuel is used) and cause the explosion.
Also Solace you are now arguing about rebel tactics not how strong the neck amour is on the AT-AT.

You guys are forgetting one thing. The T-47 was originally a civilian craft, but the Alliance couldn't afford buying military/paramilitary craft because of their budget. They spent as much money as they could to get powerful weapons mounted onto those speeders. They had to mount a more powerful generator on the speeder to maintain the massive power requirements needed for the engines. As stated, the neck is the weak point of the AT-AT. The explosion was for greater visual effect. Severing the head from the neck of the walker would have disabled it. Notice how the pilot took multiple shots before hitting the neck point.

But they still could have just shot them in the side of the neck and not have had to go through all the trouble of tethering the legs first.
Hell, I would have gone in from behind and hit the fuel tank with everything I got.
Rebel tacticians thought that tripping the AT-ATs would be the most effective way of taking them out instead of using weak blaster bolts to do very little damage to the AT-AT.
